Medicare Supplement Insurance

Since 1965, Medicare has been the federal insurance program for people age 65 and older.  Medicare Part A covers hospital, Nursing Home and Home Health Care charges and expenses.  Part B covers primarily doctor's charges, outpatient services and other related expenses.  However, Medicare does not cover all medical expenses.  About 86% of Medicare beneficiaries have supplemental insurance beyond Medicare.

Medicare was not designed to cover long term care expenses.  Medicare does pay for some skilled nursing facility and home health care expenses.  However, the skilled nursing facility coverage is a limited amount of recovery benefits from an incident that requires hospitalization.  Medicare only covers a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation for a short period of time.  Although Medicare offers coverage for up to 100 days, the actual benefit received is typically less than 20 days.  In the future, home health care benefits may be reduced with the implementation of a new prospective payment system to providers.
